Alkalinity (Pf, Mf) and Lime Content: The Calculation Explained

Pf, Mf and Pm are three small titration numbers that tell you whether your alkalinity, your lime and your carbonate balance are where the mud was designed to sit. Read them together and they diagnose contamination before it shows up as gelation.

What the letters mean

Alkalinity is the acid a sample consumes to reach a set pH. Pf is the phenolphthalein alkalinity of the filtrate — acid to pH 8.3. Mf is the methyl-orange alkalinity of the filtrate — acid to pH 4.3. Pm is the phenolphthalein alkalinity of the whole mud. All are reported as millilitres of 0.02 N acid per millilitre of sample. Pf and Mf read the dissolved bases; Pm captures the dissolved and suspended bases, which is what lets you back out the lime.

Carbonate vs bicarbonate, at a glance

The relationship between Mf and Pf flags the carbonate system. If Mf is much greater than 2×Pf, bicarbonate dominates — often a CO₂ or cement-contamination trail. Watching Pf and Mf move together across a shift is how a mud engineer sees a carbonate problem building before rheology locks up.

The equation

Lime content from the whole-mud and filtrate alkalinities, with the water fraction (Fw) from the retort:

Lime (lb/bbl) = 0.26 × (Pm − Fw × Pf)

Fw is the volume fraction of water in the mud (e.g. 0.80 for 80% water by volume from the retort).

Worked example. A water-based mud reads Pm = 4.0, Pf = 0.5, and the retort gives a water fraction Fw = 0.80. Lime = 0.26 × (4.0 − 0.80 × 0.5) = 0.26 × (4.0 − 0.4) = 0.26 × 3.6 = 0.94 lb/bbl.
Reading the result

Low excess lime in a lime-treated or high-pH system means your buffer is spent — treat before pH and rheology swing. A climbing Pm with flat Pf usually means suspended alkaline solids (lime, cement) building in the mud.

Common questions

What is the difference between Pf and Pm?
Pf is measured on the filtrate and reflects only dissolved bases and salts. Pm is measured on the whole mud and includes both dissolved and suspended alkaline material, so the gap between them is what reveals the lime held as undissolved solids.

What pH do the endpoints correspond to?
The phenolphthalein endpoint (P) is pH 8.3 and the methyl-orange endpoint (M) is pH 4.3. Those two endpoints are what let the test separate hydroxide, carbonate and bicarbonate alkalinity.
