
“This shaker cuts at 100 microns.” It is the most repeated line in solids control — and it is misleading. Separation is a process, not a number. This video unpacks what cut point actually is, and why quoting a single micron figure hides more than it tells.
Every separation device removes a range of particle sizes, not everything above a clean line. The number people quote is usually the D50 — the size at which half the particles are removed and half pass. What really matters is the sharpness of that cut: how quickly removal climbs from 0% to 100% across the size range. Two devices with the same D50 can perform completely differently.
