Oil–Water Ratio (OWR): How to Calculate It From the Retort

The oil–water ratio (OWR) is the single number that tells you how an invert-emulsion mud is built — and it falls straight out of the retort. Get it wrong and the emulsion, the rheology and the fluid-loss control all drift with it.

What OWR actually is

OWR is the ratio of the volume percent oil to the volume percent water in an oil- or synthetic-based mud, where each is taken as a fraction of the total liquid phase only — solids are set aside. It is written as two numbers that sum to 100, for example 80/20 or 75/25.

The reason it matters is emulsion stability. An invert emulsion is water dispersed in oil; push the water fraction too high for the emulsifier package and the emulsion weakens, electrical stability drops and you start chasing whole-mud problems that began as one drifting number.

Where the numbers come from

Every input is a retort reading. A measured sample of mud is heated in the retort until the oil and water distil off and condense into the graduated receiver; the solids stay behind. The receiver gives you % by volume oil and % by volume water directly, and the balance is % by volume solids. OWR uses only the two liquid readings — API RP 13B-2 is the governing method.

The equation

Working from the retort’s volume percentages:

% oil in liquid = Voil ÷ (Voil + Vwater) × 100

% water in liquid = Vwater ÷ (Voil + Vwater) × 100

The OWR is simply those two figures reported together as oil / water.

Worked example. A retort on an OBM sample reads 60% oil, 20% water, 20% solids by volume. Total liquid = 60 + 20 = 80. % oil = 60 ÷ 80 × 100 = 75. % water = 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25. The oil–water ratio is 75/25.
Reading the result

An 80/20 mud reading 75/25 has quietly taken on water. Before you dump and rebuild, find the source — a wet formation, a brine crossover, or rain into an open pit — then correct the ratio by adding base oil (raises oil fraction) rather than only treating symptoms.

Common questions

Does OWR include the solids?
No. OWR is calculated on the liquid phase only. You take the oil and water volume percentages from the retort and ignore the solids reading when forming the ratio.

What is a typical OWR for oil-based mud?
Most invert-emulsion systems run somewhere between 90/10 and 70/30 depending on density and downhole conditions. The right number is whatever the emulsifier package and mud weight were designed for — a shift away from it is the signal, not the absolute value.
