Material selection is a pump-performance decision, not only a procurement decision. In drilling service the wear system includes casing, impeller or rotor, stator, liners, seals, bearings, elastomers and the pipe route.
The pump may be correctly sized hydraulically and still fail in field use if the wetted materials are wrong for chloride, oil, caustic, temperature, barite, sand, cement contamination or abrasive cuttings fines.
Materials, Erosion and Wear Control
Wear selection is a velocity and material problem before it is a spare-parts problem. Abrasive drilled solids, barite, sand, scale and poor recirculation practice attack impellers, casings, stators, diaphragms and seals in different ways. The correct material choice depends on particle hardness, impact angle, elastomer compatibility, temperature, chemical exposure and whether the pump runs close to shutoff or in a stable flow range.

Material selection should follow the dominant damage mechanism: sliding abrasion, impact erosion, chemical attack, elastomer swelling, heat, dry-running or solids packing. The same material that survives brine transfer may fail quickly in barite-rich or oily sludge service.
