A slurry pump is a wear-managed machine for abrasive solids carried in liquid at enough velocity to avoid deposition. A transfer pump is a broader duty label and may be unsuitable if solids concentration, particle size or line length creates severe wear.
The deciding question is not whether the material is called mud, sludge or cuttings. The deciding question is particle loading, settling tendency, velocity, route losses and expected component life.
Slurry Duty Versus Simple Transfer
A slurry pump is justified when the material can settle, abrade or plug the route if velocity and passage size are wrong. A transfer pump is justified when the fluid is pumpable, reasonably homogeneous and the main task is moving volume between tanks or systems. The decision should use particle loading, line velocity, route geometry, wear rate and restart behaviour after a stop.
